Textile import quotas won't be extended

Textile import quotas had successfully shielded the South African industry from competition from China, but would not be renewed at the end of this month, trade and industry director-general Tshediso Matona said yesterday.

"There are no new quotas," Matona told a media briefing, adding that this was because interested parties had not asked for an extension.

If an extension was requested, the department would consider it by the end of the month.
"If we don’t get any, they will expire."

According to Matona, industry players have reported that the quotas have resulted in a "marked reduction in imports from China".

Matona rejected suggestions that the department had been reluctant to help the ailing industry, and said internal squabbling in the trade had held up the government’s rescue efforts. – Sapa
